My life as a student is pretty straight forward and functions as if any other students day, classes, and relationships with teachers go, but in digital design and game art, that all changes. Now, I know what you are thinking, it can’t be that crazy in this kid’s class or at his school and to be honest you are right. I am going to simply share what my life is like aa a student at DSA and in specific, Mr. Bourgeois’s class.
To start off, every day when my classmates and I walk in the door we are greeted by Mr. B and then take or seats. We have however much time before the bell rings to get signed into our computer and work if we would like. When starting new units, once the bell has rung, he will often give us instructions for what we will be diving into, both verbal as well as written instructions. Following that, we will either ask questions as well as begin working. Most periods we are allowed to do whatever we please as long as we are on task and it is class appropriate. With this time in class to work, most people choose to do assignments that require special software to do, such as platforms like Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and 3ds max. This is because most people don’t own these platforms on their computers at home so they spend class time using them. I enjoy this class for the most [art due to how the class functions, the environment, and the way students interact with each other during class time. The only downside about this class is that there are not a lot of breaks for working. The workload is heavy and most assignments require software that is not easily obtainable outside of school. When I say that I mean, most people do not want to pay for these platforms simply for the class. On the other hand, a way of dealing with this is that Mr. Bourgeois offers tutoring every day of the week so that if you don’t finish an assignment, you can get it done in school, outside of class. Overall I have enjoyed this class so far this year and look forward to my future enrolled in it.

One of the video games that I have played recently and have always played on and off for the past several years is Minecraft. It has always been a game that I love but recently have come to an appreciation for it that is more than in past years. The thing that I have really come to enjoy about it is that it is relaxing, great to play with friends, and the art style is extremely unique but amazing. I would definitely recommend this game to others, as well as tell you that it is worth paying full price for and here are some reasons why; Minecraft is for sure a very open world game, and as far as I know not a lot of story line behind it. Basically the main goal is to build, mine, and create whatever you please in a world of your own, there are no boundaries (for the most part). You first spawn into a game with nothing and are left to harvest resources and create tools for survival. Once you have gotten basic necessities you can progress further and create or do whatever you want. When I say create I mean you can quite literally build whatever you want using blocks and some variety of other objects, which actually leads into the graphics and art style of the game. Minecraft is all blocked based, meaning that every part of the game is made of a cube or distinct pixel of sorts, which requires some basic math and planning when building stuff. Which in a way totally fits the game style, being a survival game, and I only say this because Minecraft has a very unique art style especially for a survival based game but turned out being a total success. As far as the way the game functions, I think that the graphics accurately match the way the player moves and how other things function, people and animals in the game move more robotic rather than fluidly. In my opinion the biggest thing that Mojang hit home on was depth and appropriate perspective in this game. As non-visually realistic as this game is, the nature in the game is truly magnificent, they did an extraordinary job of implementing colors to match each scenery and especially sunsets during game-play. As well as visual art, the audio in the game was pretty much mastered, that includes basic sound effects and especially background music. Both of those set the perfect mood, sometimes the music will even match the intensity of the game creating a whole different kind of experience. The one thing that they also did a good job of in my opinion were the controls, even though they were basic they were all you needed due to the game being pretty basic as far as movement goes, I think they could have done a little bit of a better job with it but nothing major at all. At that point its all really based on preference. The games code and interface was all very good, I can't remember any times where the game crashed or had any problems with formatting and grammar. This leads me to say that I would rate this game five out of five stars, I personally enjoyed the style, game-play, and vibe of the whole game, it is a game for creative people due to their being not a lot of structure really at all. Even if you don't consider yourself a creative person, this game may bring out the creative side in you, I would recommend it for all audiences. Again, five out of five stars, great game!
Both bitmap and vector graphics are very important for varying jobs. For example, a photographer will demand more knowledge in Photoshop, as where a digital designer will require and benefit from more knowledge in Adobe Illustrator. This is because the two jobs are very different and bring out the differences between the two platforms. A photographer might want to alter the colors in a picture of a landscape, and photoshop is designed for exactly that. As where a digital designer might need to make a logo for a company and Adobe Illustrator gives them the ability to do that, by using shapes, lines, and colors. They are both equally important, just used for different purposes.
When working with bitmap graphics compared to vector graphics I found that out of the two I most enjoyed using vector graphics. So far they appeal more to me, from what I’ve seen it has had more of a creative or artist aspect to them. I say this because you can make whatever you want using basic or advanced shapes, even shapes of your own. On the surface, the application is very basic but as you advance in skills that it requires it becomes more advanced. Photoshop is very similar, but to me feels less like I’m doing art and more feels like I’m simply altering images by changing their color, size, and perspective. Towards the end of the unit, we did a double exposure project where the class was tasked with combining two images to convey a double meaning. This was definitely the first step towards using the application more creatively, but unfortunately, we did not continue with the application and moved on. I feel that if I got skilled in Photoshop I would enjoy it more, but as of now, I am more interested in Illustrator, most likely because of it being easier to kick off your career of using it. Overall, I have enjoyed using both platforms very much so far this year and look forward to using them in the future as well. Includes:
